Basics for the novice cook

Oven Chips

Real chips, as nice as they are (especially if twice cooked), are a real chore, and if you haven’t got a really strong extractor fan, then you’re going to stink out the house. If anyone in our house wants chips, I invariably go to the freezer and reach for my bag of oven chips.

I don’t usually promote particular brands of products, but in this case I will say that, having tried a supermarket’s own brand of oven chips once, I’ll be sticking to a popular brand in future.

Scatter the required amount of chips, straight from the freezer, onto a non-stick oven tray and place in the oven. The temperature and cooking time should be on the packaging (typically 25 minutes in a preheated oven 220 centigrade. 210 Fan, Gas mark 8), but will need to be cooked until the chips are turning a golden colour. The most exposed parts of the chip will colour first, so if you are cooking a large quantity, they may need turning over with a large spoon half way through, to ensure even cooking.

( For information: I’ve recently acquired an Air-Fryer. If you have one, then cook your oven chips in it. Mine will cook oven chips in 20 minutes at 195 degrees, and they are amazing! )
